Teacher cover letter example

Quick answer
A UK teaching cover letter is usually one to two sides and is read by the headteacher. Name the post and start date, evidence pupil progress with data, cover safeguarding, and say something specific about the school.

The full letter

Dear Mrs Okafor,

I am writing to apply for the Year 4 class teacher post advertised on the school website, to start in January. I am an ECT-complete primary teacher with four years in a two-form entry school in the same local authority.

In my current Year 4 class, the proportion working at expected standard in reading rose from 61% to 84% across the year, and in maths from 66% to 88%, following a shift to daily fluency practice and small-group intervention that I planned and led. I am also phonics lead across KS1, and I hold a current designated safeguarding lead deputy qualification.

I am applying to your school because of the mastery maths rollout described in your most recent Ofsted report. I have taught the approach for two years and would like to be in a school committing to it fully rather than in parallel with older schemes.

I would welcome the chance to teach a sample lesson, and I am available for interview on any day after school. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]

What makes this teacher letter work

  • Lead with pupil progress data, it is the single strongest evidence a teaching application can carry.
  • Mention safeguarding training explicitly, it is a screening criterion.
  • Reference the school's own Ofsted report, prospectus or curriculum plan.
