Speculative cover letter example

Quick answer
A speculative cover letter has no advert to answer, so it has to create the reason to reply. Lead with something specific about the employer, offer one narrow area of value, and propose a concrete next step.

The full letter

Dear Mr Hughes,

I am writing on the off chance that you are planning to add to your operations team in the next few months. I noticed your second Midlands site went live in July, and I currently run inbound logistics for a comparable 40,000 sq ft facility.

The specific thing I would bring is despatch accuracy work. In my current role I raised accuracy from 97.1% to 99.6% over nine months by rebuilding pick verification, and I have taken a site through its first carrier tender, covering roughly 1,200 consignments a month.

I appreciate there may be nothing open right now. If it is useful, I would welcome twenty minutes on a call to hear how you are staffing the new site, and I am happy for you to keep my CV on file either way.

Thank you for your time.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]

What makes this speculative letter work

  • Reference a real, recent development at the company, otherwise it reads as a mass mailing.
  • Offer one narrow, evidenced capability rather than general enthusiasm.
  • Ask for a short conversation, not a job.
