Internal Promotion cover letter example

Quick answer
An internal promotion letter should not restate your CV. Evidence work already visible to the reader, name the gap you have been filling, and be direct about the scope you are asking for.

The full letter

Dear Daniel,

I am writing to apply for the Team Leader position in the fulfilment team, advertised internally on 8 September. I have been a senior operative in the same team for three years.

I have covered team leader duties for a total of eleven weeks over the past year, including the whole of the Christmas peak. During that cover, despatch accuracy held at 99.5% and we cleared the backlog two days ahead of the plan I set. I also wrote the current pick verification standard, which cut mispicks by 27% after rollout.

What I want from the role is the part I could not do while covering: the rota and the development conversations. I have been coaching two new starters informally and would rather do that with the authority to set objectives.

I am happy to be assessed on the peak cover period and can step into the role immediately. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]

What makes this internal promotion letter work

  • Reference work your reader has already seen; that is your advantage over external candidates.
  • Be explicit about what you want from the role, not just why you deserve it.
  • Keep it to one side, internal readers know your history.
