Civil Service cover letter example

Quick answer
Civil Service applications rarely take a traditional cover letter. Where a supporting statement is requested, structure it around the Success Profiles behaviours in the advert and write each example in STAR format within the word limit given.

The full letter

Dear Recruitment Team,

I am writing to apply for the Senior Executive Officer post in Operational Delivery (vacancy 987654) advertised on Civil Service Jobs on 5 September. I am currently an HEO in the same profession with six years' operational experience.

On Making Effective Decisions, I redesigned a casework triage process affecting 40 caseworkers. I analysed twelve months of handling data, tested a two-tier triage with a pilot group of eight, and rolled it out after it cut average handling time by 22% without raising the error rate, which I monitored weekly for a quarter.

On Communicating and Influencing, I secured agreement from three regional managers who initially opposed the change by presenting the pilot data alongside their own team-level figures and agreeing a rollback point in advance. All three adopted the process within one month of the pilot ending.

I am available for interview throughout October and can move within the department at four weeks' notice. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

[Your name]
