12 UK CV Mistakes That Cost You Interviews in 2026

The 12 most common UK CV mistakes British recruiters reject on sight, from US spellings to missing personal statements and dodgy date formats.

Quick answer
Twelve things UK recruiters bin a CV for in 2026, and the fast fixes for each.

UK recruiters bin CVs on sight for a handful of predictable reasons. Fix these twelve and you'll clear sift on most 2026 UK vacancies.

1. American spellings

"Organized", "colorized", "resume", instant credibility hit for a UK role. Run a spell-check set to British English.

2. No personal statement

Skipping the four-to-six-line profile under your contact details is the fastest way to be filtered out. It's the most-read part of a UK CV.

3. Wrong date format

Use DD Month YYYY ("06 May 2026"), not MM/DD/YYYY. UK ATS systems mis-parse US formats.

4. Photo, DOB, marital status

These belong on European Europass CVs, not British ones. Remove them.

5. Tables and columns

They look tidy but UK ATS parsers scramble them. Stick to single-column layouts.

6. Three pages for a mid-career role

Two pages of A4 is the UK standard. Only executives should extend to three.

7. Buzzwords without evidence

"Results-driven team player" says nothing. Replace with a quantified outcome.

8. Skills bar graphics

Pretty visual, unparseable by every UK ATS. Use plain text lists.

9. Missing keywords from the advert

UK ATS scoring is largely keyword match. Mirror three to five words from the job description.

10. Generic personal statement across every application

Recruiters spot copy-paste in seconds. Tailor the first paragraph for each role.

11. "References available on request"

Redundant filler that wastes valuable page-one space.

12. Wrong file name

Save as Firstname-Lastname-Role-CV.docx. Anything else is harder for recruiters to find in their inbox.
